What is a “Rollover” Accident?

Why Rollover Crashes Are The Most Dangerous

A rollover crash occurs when a vehicle rolls over onto its side or roof after a collision — and it’s considered one of the most dangerous types of crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that rollover accidents have the highest fatality rate over all other kinds of crashes. Rollover crashes account for almost 35% of passenger vehicle crash deaths. Here’s what you need to know about the two types of rollover crashes.

Tripped Rollovers

Tripped rollovers occur when a vehicle veers off the road into soft soil or strikes an object, such as a curb or guardrail. The high-impact force to the tires then causes the vehicle to roll over. According to the NHTSA, 95% of single-vehicle rollovers are classified as tripped rollovers. Tripped rollovers can also occur when drivers are going at high speeds, and one side of the vehicle hits an object forcing a rollover.

Un-Tripped Rollovers

Un-tripped rollovers are not as common as tripped rollovers and occur mostly in larger vehicles, like semi-trucks heavily loaded. Often, un-tripped rollovers are due to sudden maneuvers or swerving to avoid impact with another vehicle or object. Top-heavy vehicles attempting to make sudden moves while traveling fast can cause the driver to lose control, resulting in a rollover crash.
